That is true, but incomplete. Ordinary people and poor people can also do charitable work.

Those without money can campaign, collect donations, or contribute their labor when others contribute possessions. Why not sign up to join volunteer groups to carry, load, and distribute gifts to local people?

Why not work with others to raise money for charity? Why not go on social media to Like posts or write supportive comments for people calling for flood relief?

A word of encouragement and support for people doing charitable work, or advice, encouragement, sharing, and empathy for those less fortunate, can also be treasured charitable “gifts” for the spirit.

With health, time, and a caring heart, you can still do charity. You do not need to wait until you have plenty or become wealthy. I see many school and university students selling flowers on holidays, or books, pens, and study materials, to raise money for people living in poverty and people with disabilities. Many others offer free motorbike rides and parking services or serve as volunteer “guides” during exam seasons.

School and university students who volunteer at school or in the wider community are doing charity in a way that suits their circumstances. Giving is receiving. Charity helps others while also helping us become better, more selfless and compassionate—in other words, more human.

Charitable work is demanding and sometimes misunderstood through selfish, narrow-minded, or envious perspectives.
